About John Rutter

Born in London in 1945, John Rutter received his early musical education as a chorister at Highgate School. He went on to study music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he wrote his first published compositions and conducted his first recording while still a student.

From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, whose choir he directed in a number of broadcasts and recordings. After giving up the Clare post to allow more time for composition, he formed the Cambridge Singers as a professional chamber choir, and he now divides his time between composition and conducting. He has guest-conducted or lectured at many concert halls, universities, music festivals, and conferences in Europe, Scandinavia, North America and Australasia. He is an Honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, and a Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians. Christmas somehow wouldn't seem the same without his works lilting in the frosty air.

About the singing day

The venue for the day is the impressive upper floor of a Victorian Wesleyan Chapel, seating well over 400 people. It has, over recent years, been used for a wide range of choral and orchestral concerts. We will be singing "in the round", which will provide an unrivalled opportunity to hear what the rest of the choir sounds like, whatever your voice part! It is only a few minutes walk from the railway station, and Scarborough has a Park and Ride operation.

This event is one of a number sponsored by the Staxton Singers as part of their Silver Jubilee Year Celebrations. The choir are members of Making Music and the National Association of Choirs, and their conductor, Stan Kell, is a member of abcd (The Association of British Choral Directors).
